How Google BERT Works

BERT stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. When Google announced its integration into search in October 2019, it was described as one of the biggest leaps forward in search history. BERT is a deep learning NLP (Natural Language Processing) model that helps Google understand the context of words within a query — specifically how the meaning of a word changes depending on the words that surround it.

Why Google BERT Matters for SEO

For example, in the query “2019 Brazil traveller to USA need a visa,” the word “to” is critical to meaning. Pre-BERT, Google might have misinterpreted this query. BERT’s bidirectional reading — processing words in relation to all surrounding words simultaneously — allows it to correctly parse the meaning: a Brazil citizen travelling to the USA needs a visa. If you’re unsure how Google BERT is impacting your site, working with an experienced SEO consultant can help you identify the problem and fix it efficiently.

Common Google BERT Mistakes

BERT reinforced what Hummingbird began: content must be written for humans first, in natural language, addressing genuine user intent. Keyword stuffing and awkward keyword insertion patterns are actively penalised by BERT’s ability to detect unnatural language. In my content work for Nepal clients, BERT is the algorithmic reason why I always write conversationally and prioritise answering the actual question over mechanical keyword inclusion.

Do’s and Don’ts: Google BERT

✅ Do This ❌ Don’t Do This
✅ Build clear site architecture that lets users and bots navigate within 3 clicks of the homepage ❌ Overload navigation with too many links — it dilutes PageRank and confuses crawlers
✅ Focus on topical authority — cover a subject comprehensively before targeting new topics ❌ Chase every new keyword trend without a coherent content strategy first
✅ Align every page to one primary search intent: informational, commercial, navigational, or transactional ❌ Target multiple competing intents on a single page — it causes keyword cannibalization
