💡 Think of it like this: Your website is a building. Indexability is like the plumbing behind the walls — visitors never see it, but without it working correctly, nothing functions properly.

How Indexability Works

Indexability is simply the question: can Google add this page to its search index? A page that is indexable meets all the technical requirements for inclusion in Google’s index — it returns a 200 HTTP status code, is not blocked by robots.txt, does not have a noindex meta tag, is not a canonical redirect to another page, and is accessible to Googlebot’s crawler.

Why Indexability Matters for SEO

In my Nepal technical SEO audits, checking indexability is one of the first steps. A page that is not indexable cannot rank, regardless of how excellent its content or backlink profile might be. If you’re unsure how Indexability is impacting your site, working with an experienced SEO consultant can help you identify the problem and fix it efficiently.

Common Indexability Mistakes

Indexability issues are completely within the control of the website owner — they are technical decisions that either allow or block Google from indexing a page. Common unintentional indexability blocks include: noindex tags left in place after a staging site migration, robots.txt rules that are too broad and accidentally block production pages, and canonical tags pointing to the wrong URL creating a redirect chain that confuses Googlebot.

Do’s and Don’ts: Indexability

✅ Do This ❌ Don’t Do This
✅ Submit your sitemap.xml to Google Search Console and keep it clean ❌ Ignore crawl errors — they waste crawl budget on dead pages
✅ Set canonical tags on duplicate and near-duplicate pages ❌ Leave both HTTP and HTTPS versions accessible without redirects
✅ Test your robots.txt before deploying to prevent blocking key pages ❌ Block JavaScript or CSS files in robots.txt — it breaks Google’s rendering
✅ Monitor Core Web Vitals monthly and fix regressions quickly ❌ Ignore page speed issues — slow pages lose rankings and conversions
